Janice G. Murphy, FACHE
President and CEO, St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio

From roots in Catholic ministry to extensive nursing expertise to executive leadership, Janice G. Murphy’s 40-year career in health care leadership has reflected a passion for people and purpose. Appointed president and CEO of the Sisters of Charity Health System in January 2022, Jan’s global experience in health care leadership and roots in Catholic faith are ushering in a new era for the Sisters of Charity Health System.

Prior to taking the helm at the Sisters of Charity Health System, she served as president and CEO of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center since August 2019 and prior to that, Jan was the senior vice president of mission and ministry at the Sisters of Charity Health System. For most of her career, Jan served in a number of executive leadership roles at Cleveland Clinic.

She served as chief operating officer (COO) of regional hospitals and family health centers for the Cleveland Clinic. In that role, she was responsible for the operations of 10 community hospitals, 21 family health centers, three freestanding emergency departments, and three health and wellness centers. Prior, she served as COO of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, president of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, president of Cleveland Clinic Fairview and Lakewood Hospitals, senior vice president and COO of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, and chief nursing officer of Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital.

A native Clevelander, Jan’s career in medicine began in the convent. Ultimately, she decided nursing was her true vocation and she left the convent and entered Fairview Hospital’s School of Nursing. Jan worked in oncology and coronary care at Fairview Hospital and worked her way up to serve as chief nursing officer at Fairview Hospital and then to chief operating officer.

A Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, Jan holds a master’s degree in nursing and administration from the University of Akron, bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bowling Green State University, and a registered nursing degree from the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing. She was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and is an Associate with the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine.
